Report of the Secretary
The AKC has notified the SCWTCSC that the Great Western shows are officially closed. I received Wood Wornellʼs signed contract to judge our Independent Specialty on Friday during Great Western weekend 2015. I received notice that there will be an Irish Dog Fair next June to which we are invited to participate with our Wheatens. It is scheduled for the third weekend in June in Long Beach. Unfortunately, that is the same weekend as Great Western, but the fair sounds like great fun for those club members who do not participate at Great Western.
Report of the Treasurer
Jackie Whitham passed out a detailed breakdown on the Great Western 2014 profits and losses. The bottom-line is that the SCWTCSC will be over $1000.00 in the black. The exact amount cannot be determine at this time because Jackie is currently tracking down the advertising checks which were received by a Club member, but subsequently misplaced. When all the checks are accounted for, Jackie will be able to present the final numbers.
Rescue Report
A couple of questions have arisen regarding the SCWTCSCʼs rescue policy which Bonney and Connie Koehler wish to clarify this evening. The first is that this club does not, and never has, purchased Wheatens to rescue them. The Club only accepts dogs relinquished by their owners, or taken from an Animal Shelter or another recognized rescue organization. We do not purchase Wheatens advertised in the Pennysaver, Craigʼs List, or online because those dogs are being advertised for profit to the seller. As Rescue Chairman, Connie made a motion to formalize the Clubʼs policy in a new Standing Rule. Connie moved that the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Southern California will not purchase, or pay a fee, for any dog advertised online, or anywhere else, for the purpose of rescue and that this determination will become a new standing rule. The motion was seconded and passed.
Another issue which has recently been discussed is the SCWTCSCʼs practice not to take into rescue Wheatens which are people aggressive.
Connie made a motion to codify the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Southern Californiaʼs long standing policy as a new Standing Rule, that the SCWTCSC never takes Wheatens which demonstrate aggression to people. Any Wheaten which has a documented history of biting people can never be accepted into rescue. The motion was seconded and passed.
Our rescue organization successfully arranged for Sunny the Wheaten to travel from Temecula to her new home in Alaska. There is additional good news in that it appears the bitch is not twelve years old, but eight. Kay Baird visited a dog in the Coachella Valley Shelter which she determined was not a Wheaten.
Website Report
Michelle Montes-Capton is the SCWTCSC Clubʼs new website co-ordinator, succeeding Connie Koehler. Connie reported that they have fully transitioned, and Michelle confirmed that she will have the Fun Day flyer posted on the website after Montgomery.
Membership Report
There is nothing to report this month.
Report of the Nominating Committee
Jeanine sent out the slate of next yearʼs Officers and Directors on August 6th. To repeat, they are:
President: Bonney Snyder
Vice-President: Ann Leigh
Treasurer: Jackie Whitham
Secretary: Jeanine Flavell
Directors: Miriam Kahan, Cecily Skinner, and Laura Virant.
The nominations for the 2014 SCWTCSC Board of Officers and Directors have been closed. Jeanine Flavell will cast the final vote at the Annual Dinner, on December 7, 2014.
Bonney thanked the Nominating Committee for their efforts. The committee members were Jeanine Flavell, chairman, Karla Cohen, and Laura Virant, with Lesley DeMattia and Mary Lindquist serving as alternates.
Fun Day
The Fun Day will be held this year at Woodley Park, on November 9th, in conjunction with the Kennel Club of Beverly Hillʼs B-Match. Once again there will be games, a rescue parade, a pot luck lunch, and the return of the White Elephant sale, followed by a General Meeting of the SCWTCSC, and voting for Great Western 2016 judges and the 2015 Great Western Sweepstakes judge. The Fun Day Flyer will be available on our website. The SCWTCSCʼs B-Match will be held in the morning, and will be judged by Sherry Boyd.
Jackie Whitham will double check our insurance coverage for this event.
Great Western 2015
Ann Leigh has agreed to chair again this year with Lesley DeMattia joining her as co- chair. Ann is looking for theme ideas as well as new ideas for merchandise. Michelle Montes-Capton suggested umbrellas. Other ideas were nylon quilted vests, sun visors, and towels, both beach and hand towels with the SCWTCSC logo on the items. The themes which have been suggested are: Lifeʼs A Beach, Up, Up and Away, Gold Rush, and Summer in the City. For the art work this year, Ann would like to work with Beth Babos. Almost all of the committee chairs have been identified, approached, and have accepted.
The necessary new committee which has not yet been created is that of grounds. Ann and Bonney are clear that in the future there must be a set-up and breakdown committee. Each of the other Great Western committee chairs will be responsible for collecting all their material, and getting it to whichever van or car the Club is using. All of the SCWTCSCʼs property will then be transported to the storage locker.
Annual Holiday and Installation Dinner
This year the Annual Dinner will be on December 7th at the Beckham Grill in Pasadena, California. The menu and the prices have been set. Miriam reported that the restaurantʼs management have assured her that the decorations will be up prior to our party.
Nominations for Great Western 2016
The judges nominated for Great Western 2016 are: Sherry Boyd, Michael Buckley, Chris Erickson, Geir Flyckt-Pedersen, Sue Goldberg, Wayne Harmon, and Gwenne McNamara. There will be two votes; the nominee with the greatest number will judge Sunday. The Club members will vote a second time, and the winner of that vote will judge on Friday.
A motion was made, seconded, and passed to close the nominating process.
Nominations for Great Western 2015 Sweepstakes Judge
Nominated to preside over the 2015 Sweepstakes were Camille Bakker, Sheryl Beitch, Tom Powers, and Jeri Voyles.
A motion was made, seconded, and passed to close the nominating process.
Bonney Snyder requested the secretary, Jeanine Flavell, to prepare ballots for the two votes for the judges and for the sweepstakes judge. The regular members of the SCWTCSC will cast their votes on Fun Day, which is November 9, 2014.
A motion to adjourn was made, seconded, and passed. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
