Although fun-loving family dogs, our Wheatens are terriers and can be challenging to raise and train without the proper positive guidance from their owners. A good start to raising a well-behaved pup can be found on the SCWTCA website, under “The Basics of Training Your Wheaten,” http://www.scwtca.org/breed/train
Many resources are available in the southern California area for training your Wheaten to be a model citizen. To locate a reputable obedience training club that offers instruction for companion and competition dogs, please consult the Southern California Dog Obedience Council website at http://www.scdoc.org. SCDOC has 19 member clubs across multiple metropolitan areas, listed by location and types of training offered: http://www.scdoc.org/member_clubs.htm.
In 2010 and again in 2011 at the club’s Fun Day in October, SCWTCSC is offering an evaluation to qualify for the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program. Passage of the CGC test is a solid basis for a long-lasting relationship with your Wheaten. It is also a firm foundation to begin more advanced training for competition in all performance sports. For more information on CGC, please consult the AKC’s website, http://www.akc.org/events/cgc.
